6. PROJECT BACKGROUND:

The various ecological systems of Buganda in different areas favour varied crops and animals for production. However, no area has come out assertively with a clear crop/animal product that can be identified with it. This has led to lack of specialisation and the resultant scenario is massive poverty in the countryside. While a few people venture into production they get swallowed up in the non-productive majority, which makes them fail to attract a meaningful market for their produce.

7. PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Zoning for Commercial Production project (ZOCOP) has the following objectives

(a) To zone Buganda into areas favoring particular crops/animals in for both domestic and commercial use.

(b) To establish zonal Demonstrational Centres for products/crops identified for each zone.

(c) To encourage and promote specialisation of the various zonal products in the earmarked zones especially on a commercial level

(d) To liaise with Research Institutions in the development of zonal produce

(e) To liaise with the various relevant produce marketing bodies

8. OUTPUT

Zoned areas curved out.

Specialisation of farmers and areas in certain products.

Zonal Demonstrational Centres established.

Farmer production groups identified and organised.

Commercial production farms established.

Viable and reliable marketing avenue/opportunities created.

Research translated into action for beneficiaries.

Increased income for rural household.

Improved farming methods.
