Special statement from the Katikkiro

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Taken from The Monitor, September 12th, 2009.

Despite our best efforts through various contacts to this late hour, we have not been able to secure a guarantee from the government that the Buganda Youth Day celebrations scheduled for 12th September 2009 can be held in a secure and peaceful environment.

The security and dignity of our beloved Kabaka is our top most priority and the present tense situation is not conducive for his travel to Bugerere or his attendance at the event there. Further, the lives unnecessarily lost over the last two days have made celebrations impossible.

I would therefore like to communicate as follows:

  1. The Buganda Youth Day celebrations have been postponed indefinitely
  2. I urge the people of Buganda to remain calm and law abiding. The lives and property of the people of Buganda are the kingdom’s treasure and should not be lost or destroyed needlessly.
  3. I would like to convey the Kabaka’s and the kingdom’s condolences to all those families that have lost their loved ones over the last two days.
  4. I would like to inform the people of Bugerere and Kyaggwe and the youths all over Buganda that Ssabasajja Kabaka is deeply disappointed at not being able to celebrate with you and thanks you all for your efforts in preparing the celebrations venue as well as the arches and festive events along the route from his palace to the venue.

All efforts will be made to ensure that the Buganda Youth Day celebrations are held in happier circumstances in the near future.

Eng. J. B. Walusimbi
